Wayne Rooney: Manchester United captain nets 250th club goal to become all-time top scorer ahead of Sir Bobby Charlton

Wayne Rooney moved past Sir Bobby Charlton to become Manchester United's outright all-time highest scorer on Saturday as he netted his 250th goal for the club in the Premier League clash with Stoke at the Bet365 Stadium.
A fortnight on from his early effort in the FA Cup win over Reading , which put him alongside Charlton at the top of the list on 249 United goals, Rooney became the sole record-holder by netting a stoppage-time free- kick against the Potters.
The 31-year-old United and England skipper - who surpassed Charlton as his country's all-time top scorer in 2015 - curled the effort past Lee Grant into the top corner to salvage a 1-1 draw for his side.
Rooney told Sky Sports: "(It means) a hell of a lot. "It's difficult at the moment to be over-pleased because of the result - two points dropped - but in the grand scheme of things it's a huge honour for me.
"It's something I never expected when I joined the club but I'm really proud and hopefully there's a lot more to come."

Louis van Gaal: Ex-Man Utd, Bayern Munich Barcelona and Netherlands manager retires.

Former Manchester United, Barcelona and Bayern Munich coach Louis van Gaal has announced his retirement from professional football.
The 65-year-old enjoyed a very successful career as a manager, carving out a career at top clubs in Spain, England, Germany and the Netherlands.
He said and i quote "I thought maybe I would stop, then I thought it would be a sabbatical, but now I do not think I will return to coaching, So many things have happened in my family recently, so that really was a wake up call and it put everything into perspective." After a relatively unremarkable playing career, Van Gaal became Ajax head coach in 1992 following six years on the sidelines in the Eredivisie.
He won league titles with Ajax in 1994, 1995 and 1996 and - even more impressively - triumphed in the Champions League during that period of phenomenal success. Juve unveil dramatic change to club logo Van Gaal left for Barcelona in 1997, where he won two Primera Division titles, one Copa del Rey crown, and the UEFA Super Cup.
He began his first spell as Netherlands in 2000 but infamSuper failed to reach World Cup 2002 despite a talented team including Edgar Davids, Marc Overmars and Phillip Cocu. An ill-fated, six-month return to Barcelona was followed by a brief stint as Ajax technical director, before spending four years in charge of Dutch club AZ.
Van Gaal took Bayern Munich to the Champions League final in his first year in charge, securing a domestic double in the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal, but in 2010-11 his team were a shadow of themselves and he was sacked towards the end of the season.
His second spell in charge at Netherlands was a stark contrast to his first attempt at national management, as the Oranje reached the World Cup 2014 semi-finals. Van Gaal finished his career with two years in charge at Manchester United. He was a controversial figure as many supporters didn't feel the club progressed with the Dutchman at the helm, before his former understudy at Barcelona, Jose Mourinho, replaced him in May 2016 despite FA Cup final victory.

RANIERI NAMED FIFA COACH OF THE YEAR FOR 2016 FOR LEICESTER CITY HEROICS

The Italian pipped Real Madrid's Zinedine Zidane and Portugal coach Fernando Santos to the award.
The Italian led the Foxes to their maiden top-flight crown in his first season in charge of the club last term, in one of the greatest shocks in sporting history.
The stars of FIFA's The Best award Leicester's incredible consistency has dropped off this season but they have at
least qualified for the Champions League last 16, topping their group to secure a knockout tie with Europa League 2015-16 winners Sevilla.
Ranieri, 65, fended off competition from Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane and Portugal coach Fernando Santos to claim the award at FIFA's 'The Best' awards ceremony on Monday.
Zidane guided Real to victory over neighbours Atletico Madrid in last season's Champions League final, as well as the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup in 2016.
He took over from Rafa Benitez with Real at a low ebb following their embarrassing exit from the Copa del Rey and with Barcelona looking comfortable in La Liga.
Santos, on the other hand, managed Portugal to their first major trophy with victory over France in the 2016 European Championship final.
Despite having Cristiano Ronaldo as captain, Portugal went into the tournament unfancied but battled their way to victory after a group stage in which they did not look convincing at all.
Ranieri entertained the award ceremony audience in Zurich with a typically eccentric speech, saying he felt as though it was fate that Leicester won the Premier League in 2015-16.
"What a fantastic evening for me to be here with a lot of legends, and now to win this award," he said upon receiving the prize. "I'm crazy! I'm very crazy. Thank you so much those who voted for me.

Manchester United striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been named Premier League player of the month for December.

The Swede saw off competition from the likes of Alexis Sanchez, Diego Costa and Dele Alli to win the prize for the first time.
Ibrahimovic, 35, scored five goals in six games during the course of the month as Jose Mourinho’s side went unbeaten.
The former Paris Saint-Germain forward went through a dismal spell in October and Novemeber when he bagged just one goal in 11 appearances but he’s turned his performances around as Manchester United target a
spot in the top four.
Mourinho’s side take on Liverpool on Sunday at Old Trafford and Ibrahimovic is expected to start after missing Tuesday’s EFL Cup clash with Hull through illness.
Ibrahimovic has 18 goals in 28 appearances so far this term.

RONALDO CROWNED FIFA'S BEST PLAYER IN THE WORLD

The Real Madrid superstar enjoyed a staggering 2016 and has now been awarded the title of the best player in the world, beating Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann.
The Real Madrid superstar enjoyed a fantastic 2016, and has now beaten his perennial rival Lionel Messi and Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann to the prize.
"It's a great feeling, as I mentioned many times last year was a dream year, no doubt about that," the striker said at the ceremony shortly before receiving the prize.
"Real Madrid win the Champions League and the national team won the Euros for the first time in history. Unbelievable season. I'm so proud and happy.
"I have to say thank you to my team-mates of Real Madrid, and team-mates of Portugal and the coaches. It was an amazing year."
Ronaldo scored a total of 59 goals for both club and country throughout the 12 months, as his career reached new heights. The Portugal international, despite suffering an injury in the final, guided his country to Euro 2016 glory, scoring three goals and cajoling his team-mates from the sidelines after being stretchered off.
Eder’s late goal ensured that Ronaldo lifted the trophy in France, with Griezman the player to outscore him in the tournament - on the losing side in the showpiece.
Ronaldo also scored the winning penalty in the Champions League final, as Real defeated Griezmann’s Atletico at San Siro in Milan, and was rewarded with a staggering new deal until 2021.
The 31-year-old’s incredible year – which also saw him named the world’s highest paid sports star – was capped in December, when he was awarded his fourth Ballon d’Or award.

RONALDO WINS THE SALON D'OR AGAIN!

Despite Lionel Messi catching the eye with his bleached-blonde do, his Portuguese rival has retained the title of the best haircut in football.
Cristiano Ronaldo has once again proven a cut above Lionel Messi, with the Portuguese having won the Salon d'Or for the third successive year!
In a poll of Goal readers, the Real Madrid superstar claimed 21 per cent of the 19,111 votes cast before the noon deadline, with his slick shaved sides-combover combo having proved an overwhelming hit with football fans across the globe.
After finishing as runner-up to Ronaldo in both the Ballon d'Or and this week's. The Best FIFA Men's Player of the Year award, Messi had to again settle for second best, but this was nonetheless a colossal achievement for the Barcelona No.10, who had never before made the top 20!
However, our readers responded well to his bold decision to dye his hair blonde at the start of the 2016-17 season, with the Argentina captain registering 16% of the votes to prove that he can now also compete with CR7 in the style stakes!

'WE DON'T HAVE THE HISTORY OF THEIR SHIRT' - GUARDIOLA BELIEVES MAN CITY ARE TEN YEARS BEHIND MAN UTD

The Catalan insists the Citizens need to be consistently in the Champions League over the next decade if they are to close the gap on their bitter rivals.
The Citizens have won several honours since 2010 including two Premier League titles and two League Cups and are looking to add more to their trophy cabinet under Guardiola this season.
However, the Catalan insists it is qualifying for the Champions League every season over the next decade which remains the key to City catching United. In quotes reported by the Daily Mirror, Guardiola said: “We don’t have the history with this shirt, of Barcelona, Juventus, (Bayern) Munich or Manchester United. Not their titles. “It’s about being in Europe and over the next decade to be there [in the Champions League] every year. That’s more important to this club than winning one title, believe me, more than that.

Not so invincible: Alli ends Chelsea's hopes of making history, but they'll still win the title

The Blues may have suffered defeat to their most hated of rivals but they remain well on course to
complete a remarkable turnaround from last season under Antonio Conte.
Chelsea's winning run ends at 13 in a row, an incredible record bettered only by Arsenal, who won 14
across two seasons in 2002. The Blues, though, have always had a bigger prize on their mind: the Premier League title.
The fact Chelsea are even competing for the title after such a disastrous 10th-place finish in 2015-16 is incredible, and the whole squad can hold their heads high despite a painful, Dele Alli-inflicted defeat. Antonio Conte's side remain top of the table and five points clear.
Full Time Result: Tottenham Hotspur 2 - 0 Chelsea
